Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a Cabinet meeting on August 24, 2024, and approved the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) integrated central sector scheme, the Vigyan Dhara scheme. This scheme comprises three major components: science and technology capacity building, research and development, and technology development and deployment. The primary objective of the Vigyan Dhara scheme is to strengthen the science, technology, and innovation ecosystem in the country.
₹10,579.84 Crore Investment in Science and Technology
A budget of ₹10,579.84 crore has been proposed for the Vigyan Dhara scheme during the 15th Finance Commission period, spanning from 2021-22 to 2025-26. Under this scheme, research and development laboratories in the country’s educational institutions will be strengthened, thereby bolstering India’s science and technology infrastructure. Additionally, research will be promoted through international cooperation and access to mega facilities.
Bio E3 Policy Also Approved
The Union Cabinet also approved the Bio E3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) policy. This policy aims to accelerate technology development and commercialization through biomanufacturing, bio-AI hubs, and biofoundries. It will provide innovation-driven support for research and development and entrepreneurship, thereby taking the country towards a more sustainable and innovative future.
The main objective of the Vigyan Dhara scheme is to strengthen the science, technology, and innovation ecosystem in the country and to promote research, innovation, and technology development.
