On September 1, 2024, President of India Droupadi Murmu unveiled the new Supreme Court’s Flag and Insignia during the National Conference of District Judiciary held in New Delhi. She also addressed the closing session of the conference. The event was graced by Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal, Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani, other judges of the Supreme Court, and members of the Supreme Court Bar Council Association.
Organization of the National Conference of District Judiciary
The two-day National Conference of District Judiciary was organized by the Supreme Court of India on August 31 and September 1, 2024. The conference deliberated on several important issues related to the judiciary, including:
- Infrastructure and Human Resources of the District Judiciary
- Inclusive Courts for All
- Judicial Security and Welfare
- Case Management and Judicial Training
Inauguration of the Conference by PM Narendra Modi
On August 31, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Conference of District Judiciary. On this occasion, PM Modi also released a commemorative postage stamp featuring the Supreme Court’s Flag and Insignia to mark the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court of India. This postage stamp was issued by the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications.
New Flag and Emblem of the Supreme Court
The newly unveiled flag and emblem of the Supreme Court by President Droupadi Murmu have the following features:
- Flag Color: Blue
- Elements on the Flag: Ashoka Chakra, the building of the Supreme Court, and the Constitution of India
- Inscription on the Emblem: ‘Yato Dharmastato Jayah’ (in Devanagari script)
- Meaning of the Inscription: “Where there is righteousness, there is victory.”
This Sanskrit phrase is derived from the Mahabharata and is mentioned eleven times in the Hindu epic.
History of the Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court of India came into existence on January 28, 1950. It was initially established as the Federal Court of India under the Government of India Act, 1935. After the Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, the Federal Court was transformed into the Supreme Court of India.
Currently, the Supreme Court of India has 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. The present Chief Justice of India is Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.
