Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal have made a significant discovery by identifying three new species of ginger. - Globba tyrnaensis: Found in Meghalaya, near the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge, this species thrives in the forest’s lower parts, called the understory. It attracts bees for pollination.
- Globba Janakiae: Named after the Indian botanist Dr. E.K. Janaki Ammal, this species was also discovered in Meghalaya.
- Globba Yadaviana: This species was found along Reiek Tlang Road in Mizoram and named after Rajesh Yadav, the father of one of the scientists, Ritu Yadav.
Unique Features and Conservation
The new ginger species have distinctive flowers that give them names like “weeping goldsmith” and “white dragon.” One species, Globba Yadaviana, is rare, with only about 30 plants found in Mizoram, indicating the need for conservation efforts.
