Bihar Gets Approval for Second Tiger Reserve in Kaimur District

On October 8, 2024, Bihar’s Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister, Prem Kumar, announced the central government’s approval for Bihar’s second tiger reserve in Kaimur. The reserve will be located in the Kaimur district, turning the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS) into a tiger habitat. This proposal was accepted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) during its 12th meeting.

Need for a Second Tiger Reserve in Bihar

The Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Bihar’s West Champaran district currently houses 54 tigers, surpassing its ideal capacity of 45. To ensure better wildlife management and protect the growing tiger population, Bihar needed a second tiger reserve. The Kaimur Tiger Reserve will help balance the ecosystem by relocating some tigers from VTR.

Development of Kaimur Tiger Reserve

Efforts to convert KWLS into a tiger reserve began in 2018 after the discovery of tiger tracks and prey remains. Initially, a 900-square-kilometer area was proposed for the reserve. However, after feedback from the NTCA, the area was reduced to 450 square kilometers to focus on prime tiger habitat.

The reserve is expected to have a buffer zone that includes the historical Shergarh Fort and surrounding villages. This adjustment aims to protect both the wildlife and local communities while promoting tourism in the region.

Ecological Importance of Kaimur Forest

Kaimur’s forest, covering 1,134 square kilometers, is the largest in Bihar and contributes significantly to the state’s green cover. It is also connected to wildlife corridors in neighboring states, making it crucial for biodiversity. The decision to turn KWLS into a tiger reserve will help preserve this rich biodiversity while offering a safe habitat for tigers.

Tiger Relocation Plans

To avoid overpopulation at VTR, some of its tigers will be relocated to the new Tiger Reserve. This move will ensure the animals have enough space and resources, promoting a more eco-friendly environment.
